Challenging Times 2020 no doubt is a year that nobody around the world will forget in history. COVID-19 formerly Corona Virus has had an impact on the world that all of us have not seen in living memory and leading into this Australia was hit hard by the most damaging fires in Australia’s history. We must say though that at this stage the Dairy Industry is one of the better-placed industries to be in now as from farmgate to supermarket shelves our product can be produced and retailed in a relatively solitary environment. Business as Usual Viking Australia has imported most of our semen early so that we can supply our clients with the sires best suited to current herd needs. Mobile and Digital Connection As we are to isolate ourselves from one another as much as possible, we will be contacting you by mobile or email so if you need anything please contact us as well if we don’t get to you in time. NTM provides Extra Income Sources As you will see by our pie charts on the new sires their value is broken up into three groups. 1. Production 2. Health 3. Conformation It is blatantly obvious that the greatest gains to be had on the modern cow are Health & Production. Conformation is the lesser, quite substantially, of the three. This is because the modern cow is generally a good-looking functional cow. So not too much more can be gained in these areas to help longevity. The real gains are in the areas you cannot see, chiefly the health traits and let’s face it, if you are healthy you live a long time! NTM Extra Value Like the BPI the NTM score is a $ value and is the worth each daughter gives you per lactation above a breed average bull. The highest NTM bulls are currently up to NTM 44 which equates to $748 above an average sire. This is because the NTM has so many more extra sources of income compared to most breeding systems around the world. For example, Metabolic diseases, mastitis treatments, ketosis, feet problems and the list goes on. New Sires VIKINGRED 2020 is the year of the “V Sires”, VR Viljar is taking the VikingRed Genomic program to a new level, providing many young sires that display super udders and open frames. We do not apologise for this as they are too good not to use and it takes us well away from the V Foske lines. The “V Sires” will compliment V Foske so well as they are generally strong for feet & legs and mammary, the two areas where we can lift Foske progeny and lines, helping particularly with longer thicker teats. VIKINGHOLSTEIN We already have a balanced team of Holsteins but have added two more to give us very different sires. VH Novak RC is a red carrier and was chosen because of his extreme health profile, a whopping 127! for daughter fertility and a very strong profile in the other health areas as well. VH Crown was chosen for more milk as we have many clients now that have used our Holstein for multiple generations and Health & Strength have increased dramatically. VH Crown was chosen to put a boost of milk and dairyiness back in without taking health backwards. VIKINGJERSEY VJ Quintana daughters are calving down in Australia right now as they are also in the USA, France and South Africa and he will have 600 daughters in his proof in Denmark in May. The story will soon be told. We have a strong team again this year with the proven sire, VJ Gislev, who is No. 1 in the USA among purebred daughter proven bulls, with a 197 JPI. He also ranks in the USA top 5 for Grazing Merit, Net Merit, Cheese Merit and is the breed leader for SCC as well. Be sure to look at our new young sires as well, focus being on a taller, stronger & healthier Jersey.
